چکیده

The timing and magnitude of Holocene glacial oscillations in most currently ice-free areas Antarctica remain unknown. This work focuses on the recent deglaciation northern sector Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctic Peninsula. ice cap covering ca. 90% island has receded since Last Glacial Maximum exposed 29 km2 land. We reconstruct its history based a dataset 12 36Cl exposure ages obtained through cosmic-ray (CRE) dating moraine boulders, polished surfaces erratic boulders surrounding peninsula's plateau. Results reveal that Peninsula took place during Thermal at 7–6 ka, when warm conditions promoted massive retreat. present arrangement was by 6 ka. Small cirque moraines suggest subsequent occurrence favourable climate for expansion fed intense snow deflation 4.6 1 ka foot pattern resulted from combined shrinkage different masses, rather than long-term retreat Ice Cap. No evidence glacier more cold periods (i.e. Little Age) found. These results fit well with regional deglacial histories inferred lacustrine sediments raised beaches complement existing chronological framework to help better understand geoecological dynamics.

Diversity structure of culturable bacteria isolated from the Fildes Peninsula (King George Island, Antarctica): A phylogenetic analysis perspective

It has been proposed that Antarctic environments select microorganisms with unique biochemical adaptations, based on the tenet 'Everything is everywhere, but, the environment selects' by Baas-Becking. However, this is a hypothesis that has not been extensively evaluated. This study evaluated the fundamental prediction contained in this hypothesis-in the sense that species are structured in the ...

Up, Down, and All Around: Scale-Dependent Spatial Variation in Rocky-Shore Communities of Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica

Understanding the variation of biodiversity along environmental gradients and multiple spatial scales is relevant for theoretical and management purposes. Hereby, we analysed the spatial variability in diversity and structure of intertidal and subtidal macrobenthic Antarctic communities along vertical environmental stress gradients and across multiple horizontal spatial scales. Since biotic int...

Draft Genome of Shewanella frigidimarina Ag06-30, a Marine Bacterium Isolated from Potter Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica

We present the draft genome of Shewanella frigidimarina Ag06-30, a marine bacterium from King George Island, Antarctica, which encodes the carbapenemase SFP-1. The assembly contains 4,799,218 bp (G+C content 41.24%). This strain harbors several mobile genetic elements that provide insight into lateral gene transfer and bacterial plasticity and evolution.

Recent Deceleration of the Ice Elevation Change of Ecology Glacier (King George Island, Antarctica)

Glacier change studies in the Antarctic Peninsula region, despite their importance for global sea level rise, are commonly restricted to the investigation of frontal position changes. Here we present a long term (37 years; 1979–2016) study of ice elevation changes of the Ecology Glacier, King George Island (62◦11′S, 58◦29′W). The glacier covers an area of 5.21 km2 and is located close to the H....

Holocene deglaciation of Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica.

Surface exposure ages of glacial deposits in the Ford Ranges of western Marie Byrd Land indicate continuous thinning of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet by more than 700 meters near the coast throughout the past 10,000 years. Deglaciation lagged the disappearance of ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere by thousands of years and may still be under way. These results provide further evidence that pa...
